At a time when hay fever, catarrh and chronic nasal congestion were common complaints, these simple glass irrigators were recommended by doctors and chemists as a hygienic way to cleanse the nasal passages with a warm saline solution. The word aseptic reflected the growing understanding of cleanliness and infection control, as medicine entered a new scientific age.

I often wonder who first owned it. Perhaps it sat on a Victorian dressing table, or in the bathroom cabinet of an Edwardian family, brought out each spring when the pollen arrived. Maybe it offered comfort through countless winters before being carefully wrapped away and forgotten.

This is exactly why I collect. Not because these objects are rare, but because they preserve the quiet history of ordinary life. They have witnessed changing fashions, advances in medicine, family illnesses and everyday routines that might otherwise have been forgotten.
