One of the people I met at the Godalming Psychic Fair on Sunday was Penny King, a crystal healer. I found myself drawn to her almost immediately. She wasn’t what many people imagine when they think of crystal healing. There was nothing dramatic or over the top about her. She was simply a warm, gentle lady with a calm presence, sitting beside her husband, who was there supporting her.

As we chatted, Penny told me she had spent 28½ years working for the NHS. Leaving wasn’t a decision she made overnight.

“I actually handed in my notice,” she told me, “but I was asked to stay and cover a six-month project, which I agreed to.”

At the end of those six months, Penny knew the time had finally come to move on. Even then, she admitted the decision wasn’t easy.

“After a couple of weeks, I sat and had a bit of an emotional breakdown, questioning whether I’d done the right thing. But although work can be very all or nothing at times, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

After developing ME, Penny began looking for ways to help herself manage the pain. That journey led her to crystals. What started as something personal gradually became a fascination. She collected them, learnt about them and, before long, the collection had grown so much that she began selling them too. What had begun as a way of helping herself had become a business built around something she genuinely loved.

Today, Penny works from home in a dedicated healing room where she also teaches others. Smiling, she admitted that the crystals have now taken over most of the house.

In her entrance hall sits a large piece of obsidian, which she keeps for protection and to help disperse negative energy, alongside selenite and a Ganesh statue, creating a welcoming space before visitors even step into her healing room.

I also spoke to her husband. It was lovely to see a couple working together like that. He told me that seeing Penny regain her happiness was worth far more than the career she had left behind. Sometimes getting your life back is more valuable than the salary you lose.

I asked him whether he believed in crystal healing. He smiled and admitted he hadn’t, not at first. Then he told me about the day Penny treated his back pain. During the session, he suddenly saw a bright light and asked her why she had shone a torch in his face. She hadn’t. He asked if a window had been opened. It hadn’t. He believes it was part of the healing experience, and he says the back pain never returned.

Whether you see that as coincidence, the power of belief, something spiritual, or something we simply can’t explain, it’s certainly a fascinating story.

Before I left, I bought a few crystals and a palm stone from Penny. Every evening I’ve been holding the palm stone as I settle down to sleep. Since then, I’ve been sleeping so much better. Is it the crystal? Is it the ritual of slowing down at the end of the day? Is it simply giving my mind permission to rest?

Subliminal for some. Magic for others.

I’ll let you decide.

Before we finished talking, Penny left me with one final thought.

“You’ll know when the time is right to take the leap,” she said. “My first exit wasn’t the right time for me, which is why the six-month project came along. When I finally left in July 2017, I knew it was time.”

If you’d like to discover Penny King’s work, she’s well worth meeting. She has a gentle way about her and a genuine passion for helping others, whether you’re curious about crystals or simply enjoy hearing the stories behind the people who dedicate their lives to them.
