Some of the most fascinating antiques are the ones that were never intended to become collectibles. This vintage Boots Flexible Capsules of Iron Pills tin is one such piece. Once found in homes across Britain, it offers a glimpse into a time when medicine, design and everyday life looked very different.

The olive green tin, decorated with elegant gold lettering and classic Art Deco styling, was produced by Boots the Chemists during the early twentieth century, most likely between the 1920s and 1930s. Unlike today’s disposable packaging, these sturdy tins were designed to protect their contents and were often kept long after the medicine had been used. Many were repurposed to store buttons, sewing needles, stamps, coins or treasured keepsakes, meaning they became part of family life for many years.

The History of Blaud’s Pills

The medicine inside was based on Blaud’s Pills, an iron supplement first developed in 1832 by the French physician Dr Pierre Blaud. At the time, iron deficiency, then known as chlorosis or “green sickness”, was particularly common in young women and those suffering from poor nutrition.

Dr Blaud combined iron salts into a pill that became one of the most widely prescribed treatments for anaemia throughout the Victorian era and well into the twentieth century. The medicine was considered revolutionary and was sold by pharmacies across Europe and Britain.

The wording on this tin proudly states:

“Each capsule is equal to about two Blaud’s Pills.”

Rather than swallowing two traditional tablets, Boots offered customers the convenience of taking a single flexible capsule.

Boots and Public Trust

The reverse of the tin reflects another fascinating part of British history. Boots wasn’t simply selling medicine; it was selling confidence.

The packaging explains that Boots employed highly trained analytical chemists who carefully examined every drug and preparation to guarantee purity and quality. During an era when regulations were still developing, this reassurance helped establish Boots as one of Britain’s most trusted chemists.

Its closing statement,

“You are safe in dealing with The Boots Chemists,”

perfectly captures the company’s reputation and the importance of trust in healthcare.

A Collector’s Piece

Today, tins like this are increasingly sought after by collectors of pharmacy memorabilia, advertising tins and medical antiques. The combination of attractive typography, historical significance and everyday nostalgia makes them a wonderful addition to any collection.

For me, objects like this tell the stories of ordinary people. Somewhere, this tin sat in a family’s medicine cupboard, travelled home from a local Boots branch and quietly played its part in someone’s daily life. Decades later, it survives not because it was valuable, but because someone chose not to throw it away.
