The Tea Rose Curiosity Shop

A Spoonful of Care

At first glance, this little silver-coloured object looks rather mysterious, but it is actually a vintage medicine spoon, made by A. E. Sherley & Co., a British company renowned for manufacturing medical and scientific instruments during the late Victorian and early twentieth centuries.

Before disposable syringes, plastic measuring spoons and child-friendly medicine cups, liquid medicines were often dispensed using specially designed spoons like this one. Chemists prepared remedies by hand, carefully measuring tonics, cough mixtures, iron supplements and herbal medicines into bottles. At home, these spoons allowed a precise dose to be poured directly into the patient’s mouth with minimal spills.

The enclosed design was practical as well as hygienic. Unlike an ordinary teaspoon, it helped prevent precious medicine from being wasted, especially at a time when many treatments were made individually by the local pharmacist.

A. E. Sherley & Co. supplied medical equipment to doctors, hospitals and pharmacies throughout Britain, producing everything from surgical instruments to laboratory equipment. Owning an item bearing their name offers a tangible connection to the history of British medicine.

This humble spoon would have witnessed countless moments of care. A mother soothing a feverish child. A nurse tending to a patient. A family gathering around a loved one during recovery. These quiet acts of kindness rarely appear in history books, yet they formed the fabric of everyday life.

Today, it reminds us that even the simplest objects can hold remarkable stories. It may not be made of gold, but it is rich in history, craftsmanship and human connection.

The Tea Rose Curiosity Shop believes that the most interesting collections are not always the rarest. Sometimes they are simply the objects that make us pause and wonder who held them before us. 🌹
