Imagine being a young nurse and holding one of these for the very first time.
Perhaps it’s the 1940s or 50s. Your uniform is freshly pressed, the hospital corridors smell of soap and disinfectant, and somewhere nearby a trolley rattles across the polished floor.
Someone places a glass syringe into your hand.
It feels heavier than you expected.
You’ve been taught how carefully it must be prepared, cleaned and sterilised. There are no little disposable packets to tear open and throw away afterwards. These are working instruments, used, cared for and used again.
I wonder if her hands shook the first time.
Was there an older nurse standing beside her telling her not to worry? Did she eventually become so accustomed to using one that she could prepare it without a second thought?
We’ll never know who held these particular pieces or where they spent their working lives.
And that’s what I love about old things.
Sometimes we don’t know their story, so we’re left to imagine the lives that may once have surrounded them.
