I knew I was probably spending money unnecessarily. What I didn’t realise was quite how much of it had quietly disappeared into bills, subscriptions and services I no longer thought about.
So I decided to investigate.
Rather than promising myself I would simply “spend less”, I gathered together my regular outgoings and looked at each one properly. I checked what I was paying, when the price had increased and whether I still needed what I was paying for.
I also used AI to help me organise the information and identify the questions I needed to ask. It made a job I had been avoiding feel far more manageable.
What I looked for
I searched for subscriptions I had forgotten about, services I rarely used, automatic renewals and bills that had gradually crept upwards.
Some savings came from cancelling things altogether. Others came from changing a plan, finding a better deal or simply asking a provider what they could offer.
None of the individual changes felt life-changing. Added together, however, they became impossible to ignore.
My running total
So far, the changes I’ve made are saving me approximately £3,550 a year.
That is money I had previously been losing without receiving anything particularly useful in return—and I didn’t have to make life miserable to save it.
I’ll be sharing the individual savings, the tools I used and what I discovered in future Thrifty Tips. Some ideas may work for you; others may prompt you to investigate a completely different expense.
The important thing is to begin looking.
You might be surprised by how much of your own money is hiding in plain sight.
