Long before supermarket skincare aisles and modern creams, there was one bottle that almost every British home recognised: Calamine Lotion B.P.

Manufactured by Boots Pure Drug Co. Ltd. in Nottingham, this bottle dates from around the 1940s to the 1960s and follows the standards of the British Pharmacopoeia (B.P.), ensuring it was produced to an official medical formula.

Calamine lotion was the trusted remedy for life’s everyday irritations. Sunburn after a day at the seaside, chickenpox, nettle stings, insect bites and itchy rashes were all soothed with its unmistakable pale pink lotion. Because the zinc oxide and calamine settled at the bottom, every bottle carried the familiar instruction: “Shake the bottle.”

What I love most is that bottles like this weren’t designed to be beautiful. They were practical objects, quietly waiting in bathroom cabinets and family medicine chests, only noticed when someone needed comfort. Yet today they tell the story of British healthcare before disposable plastic packaging and mass-produced pharmaceuticals.
